Conservation
During the earlier days, Hussain Sagar Lake
was one of sources of water supply for Hyderabad. However of late, it has
become the dumping point of sewage from the cities of Hyderabad and
Secunderabad. The setup of Hussain Sagar Lake has completely changed now as
there is a need to educate the people and government about sewage management
techniques. A lot of siltation and debris of plants too have accumulated on the
surface of the lake making it quite dangerous. There was a study conducted
during 2008 which revealed that the lake has crossed its threshold of eutrophic
condition and that the lake was in urgent need of conservation. The water
levels had dropped alarmingly, thereby causing immense danger to the species
that live in it. A new initiative has been proposed by the APPCB, in order to
restore the lake to its original standards and the initial stages of the
project have kicked off. What is not quite pleasant to note is that though the
sewage management techniques have kicked off in one part of the lake, the
sewage flowing into the other part of the lake is still growing in alarming
proportions and difficult to be controlled.
