Buddha Statue of Hyderabad - World's Tallest Monolith of Gautama Buddha

The Buddha statue that is found at the centre of the lake is around 22 m in height and around 450 tonnes in weight. It is made of white granite and is the world’s largest statute of Lord Buddha in a single stone. It is erected on a Rock of Gibraltar on the peaceful Hussain Sagar Lake. This statue was a result of efforts undertaken by the Buddha Purnima Project during 1985. It took around 200 workmen and 2 years to complete this sculpture. There were some operational issues in getting this statue to Andhra Pradesh; however it was finally done in 1988. The sculpture was erected on the waters during 1992.The statue and the ambience around it provides the much needed calmness to tourists who visit this place.

The statue was completed under the guidance of the senior sculptor Ganapati Stapathi. It was set up during 1992 after being brought to this place in a long carriage that operated on a whopping 192 wheels. The carriage travelled for around 60 km to reach the lake. There was a minor accident when the barge which people were using to erect the statue, fell into the river. Of the 4 people who lost their lives in this, one was an engineer.

There are a couple of beautifully decorated ferries that transport tourist from the Lumbini Park to the Buddha statue and back again. These ferries ply between these two places all through the day, many times. This place must be visited by tourists who are looking for inner peace. Situated on a solid Rock of Gibraltar, this state, made of white granite, looks grand and magnificent. The Hussain Sagar Lake is frequented by thousands of local and international tourists to have a glimpse of this great statue.
