Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad in Telangana was constructed around 1562 during the time when Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah
was ruling over the place. The lake was designed by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali.
This is an artificial lake but one can find water here permanently, as it is
being served by River Musi. During 1992, the lake got its most famous
attraction, the world’s tallest Buddha statue, erected right in the middle. The
lake is around 32 feet deep.
Since Hazrat Hussain Shah designed and
built this beautiful lake, it was named after him. The canals from the Musi
River supplies water continuously to this lake and the lake itself is built on
one of the tributaries of Musi for a stretch of 5.7 km. Hyderabad was depended
on this lake solely for its yearly water supply before the Himayat Sagar and
Osman Sagar were set up.
History
The Hussain Sagar Lake is also known as the
Tank Bund and it is located quite close to Hyderabad at a distance of around
1.5 km away. It forms the main connecting link between the cities of Hyderabad
and Secunderabad. It has the distinction of being one of the biggest lakes
built by man in the entire Asian continent. A huge statue of Buddha stands tall
in the centre of the lake.
During 1562, when Hyderabad was ruled by
Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, the Hussain Sagar Lake was conceived and built by Hazrat
Hussain Shah Wali. The huge Buddha statue that was erected in the middle of the
lake during 1992. The lake is artificial and water reaches here from the Musi
River.
This lake is one of the best places for
water sports activities like sailing, boating, yachting etc. These activities
see a huge number of tourists visiting this place all through the year. During
these activities, the lake looks bright and attractive with the decorative
yachts sailing back and forth. Looking at the increasing number of tourists to
this lake, the Tourism Board run by the State Government has introduced speed
boats and motor boats on this lake.
The Hussain Sagar Lake is surrounded by the
Necklace road that aggravates the beauty of this lake. This lake looks
absolutely heavenly during night as this road is fully illuminated and
resembles a diamond necklace. This is a sight that one should not miss. The
Lumbini Park and Birla Mandir are other famous attractions near this lake. The
Katta Maisamma, meaning, goddess of the dam is a famous temple nearby which is
visited by hundreds of devotees all through the year.
