About
Sutanuti and Govindapur are the other two
villages. Kolkata is a metropolitan city in India and is the second largest
city of India.
History
Previously, it was known by the name of Calcutta.
It was in 2001 that it was renamed as Kolkata. It is the capital of West
Bengal. Major chunks of the people here speak Bengali. It is situated on the
banks of the river Hooghly. Kolkata is famous all over the world its rich
culture and heritage. At one time, Kolkata was the center for education,
literature, politics and many art forms like dance, music, theatre etc. Kolkata
is considered to be a major tourist destination of India as it has many
wonderful tourist places and unique culture.
Lots of festivals are celebrated with great
pomp and show. The festival which tops the list in Kolkata is undoubtedly that
of Durga Puja. Many other festivals are also celebrated here.

Fort William: It is one of the major
tourist attractions in Calcutta. Fort William is located on the banks of the
river Hooghly. It was after King William III of England that Fort William was
named so. It is a fort which was built in 1696 during the British Raj. This
two-storied building served as the guardroom. It was in Fort William that the
black hole tragedy occurred. In the 1757 war of Plassey, Siraj Ud Daulah, the
Nawab of Bengal attacked the fort and crushed the Britishers. This paved the
way for the construction of a new fort by British.
Calcutta Victoria Memorial Hall: It is an
awesome museum which was built in 1921. Sir William Emerson designed the hall.
When in this hall, you will be taken into the world of past history. It is also
a hall from where you will be able to view the effigies and the photos of eminent
personalities. The Victoria memorial is a 184 ft tall structure that was
constructed on 64 acres of land.
Howrah Bridge: The Howrah Bridge is
situated in West Bengal over the Hooghly River. It is one of the busiest
bridges of the world. Howrah Bridge got its name as it connects Howrah to
Calcutta. It is also referred to as the 'Rabindra Setu' which was built in
1874. The Rabindra Setu stands on two 270 feet high pillars. It has a
cantilever truss bridge which has been s constructed without the use of any
nuts and bolts. Previously, it served as a tram route. However, now it is
serving mainly as a Road Bridge. It also has two sister bridges-Vidyasagar Setu
and the Vivekananda Setu. Both of them are situated at different points over
the Hooghly River. It is a bridge which acts as an important symbol of Kolkata.
Marble Palace of Kolkata: It was
constructed in 1835 by Rajendra Mallick India. It is home to an exquisite art
gallery. It is also the home of many marvelous objects of sculptures, art,
pictures as well as oil paintings. The center of attraction is the Reuben's
masterpieces. Here, you will also be able to come across the original paintings
of Reynolds, Rembrandt and Van Goyen. Calcutta marble palace is the one of its
kinds. It has many exquisite pieces of art. In the Calcutta marble palace,
there is also a zoo which is the home of different kinds of animals and birds.
Calcutta Nicco Park: You will be able to
find this park at Salt Lake. It is a beautiful amusement park. This park
ideally resembles the Disneyland of West Bengal having many wonderful rides and
games. One of the recent additions is the Cave ride that is adventurous as well
as interesting. The park is sprawled over an area of 40-acre land. It was
opened in 1991. It is popularly known as Jheel Meel.
